Walter Darling - The Squirrel man

1938 - 2008

I have always believed that Stanley Park is the Heart of Marton, in fact of Blackpool itself, and it is thanks to “The Friends of Stanley Park” that it is as beautiful today as it was when I was a child. One of the “Friends of Stanley Park” was a very Special man called Walter Darling, more affectionately and aptly called “The Squirrel Man”.
Walter had only two loves in his life, his beloved partner Mavis, and secondly his love and compassion for animals especially Squirrels.
We can Thank Walter for all the beautiful squirrels we see today in the park, due mainly to his own Pet Squirrels, whose offspring he released into the park. So the majority of the squirrels today are related to the first generation of Squirrels named, Bubble and Squeak.
Over the years Walter rescued and cared for many Animals, the most notorious one being “Merlin” the Crow, as a result “Merlin” and his family could be seen accompanying Walter as he did his “Rounds” through the Park, feeding his beloved friends.
Walter was a quiet and private Gentleman who after the Death of his much loved Mavis moved into a small flat and sadly in 2008 he died in his sleep.
He is still very much missed, not just by his “Human Friends” but by all the Beautiful Squirrels and other creatures within the Park.
A tree has been planted in Stanley Park in memory of this Lovely Man.
